It was one of the great honors of my life that the members of the Newspaper Guild of Pittsburgh entrusted me with the leadership of that great union for three terms (more than a decade ago now).
As I always told the members of the union then, and I still believe, the Post-Gazette is not the Block family, it’s not the people they hire to bust the union, it’s not the building(s) they operate from. The Post-Gazette is YOU, the people who show up every day to serve the people of Pittsburgh and who keep publishing and delivering quality journalism every day despite the pandemic, despite the frozen wages, despite the disrespect and the outright hostility from the family that got rich because of the decades of hard work of so many who came before you. Shame on the Blocks is right. They owe literally everything they have to the people who work for them and who worked for them in the past. How do they not see that?
I still consider members of the Guild (both current and former) to be my family. And you have to be there to support your family, especially during the hardest of times. I will stand beside the members of the Guild for as long as it takes, and I will do whatever I can to help you in your fight for a fair contract and continued fair treatment from the Blocks.
Much love and solidarity to you, always.
Newspaper Guild of President from Sept. 2007 to Oct. 2010
